How to Divide Hostas

I love hostas. They are super easy to take care of and we've been able to grow the number of hostas we have by dividing them every two years. About four years ago we had two hostas along the path to our front door. This year we now have twelve hostas! Better yet, we didn't pay anything for ten of them. We split them every two years so they have time to get big before we split them.

The next time we divide the hostas, I think it would be cool to put them along the side of the house and around the trees in the backyard. We also have another type of hosta on the other side of our housee that hasn't been divided for years so that is on the todo list!

Ok, so now on to the dividing of the hostas! For this project, we wanted to extend the line of hostas to the front of our house.

We started out by watering all the hostas to get the soil looser for digging. Once that is done, dig your hole where you would like your newly divided hosta to be put.

Find your hosta, and dig around the roots making sure not to damage them.

Next, you will need to split the hosta. I usually divide them into two but one year we divided each one three or four times and they grew huge the next year. It easiest to cut them with a knife but you could also do it with your hands.

Once you split them, put one back in the ground, and the other in your newly dug hole.

Here is this hosta in its new home.

Continue this until you've divided all of your hostas and planted them in their new spots.

Here's some after pics.
